Academics
  • Junior year is the last opportunity to raise your cumulative GPA before applying to college in the fall of senior year
  • Senior course selection:  6/7 core courses; Graduation credits=26
  • NCAA Eligibility Center:  Div I or II - eligibilitycenter.org
  • Explore Careers (Career Tab; Career Cluster Profile; Do What You Are; Career Interest Profiler)
  • Research Colleges (Find Your Fit-SuperMatch, College Match, Scattergrams, Advanced College Search, College Lookup)
  • Compile a list of colleges where you are most interested and may apply under Colleges I'm Thinking About; Plan in-person or virtual visits
COHS Student Profile
  • A profile is required before requesting teacher recommendations
  • A profile will be completed in Spring with the Counseling Center

Teacher Recommendations (Need two)
  • Ask teachers in person in May or June of Junior year
  • One recommendation must be from a core subject teacher (math, science, history, or foreign language); the second recommendation from any subject teacher
  • The request must be sent through Naviance; ("College" tab; "Apply to College">Letters of Recommendation; click the blue ADD REQUEST button on the right, select a teacher from the drop-down menu, and click/check the circle "all current and future colleges I add to my Colleges I'm Applying To list; add a personal thank you note; click blue SUBMIT REQUEST button on the bottom right).
SATs and/or ACT's
  • Test preparation:  CollegeBoard.org or Kahn Academy (use COHS email account for login)
  • SAT:  register at www.sat.org; (see CollegeBoard for paper and digital deadlines) Dates: 8/26/23; 10/7/23; 11/4/23; 12/2/23 
  • 2024 DIGITAL SAT TEST DATES: 3/9/24; 5/4/24; 6/1/24 
  • ACT:  register at www.act.org; Dates:  6/10/23 & 7/15/23
College Essay
  • Information on writing your college essay will be provided through your ELA class in late spring.  
The Common Application
  • The Common Application is a universal college application that applicants may use to apply to 900+ member colleges and universities.  Many colleges begin accepting applications in August.  Work on your application during the summer at www.commonapp.org.

Applications for the United States Military Academy at West Point have opened for High School Juniors.  It is important to start your application as soon as possible as the process can take several months to complete and includes scheduling physical exams, completing a fitness assessment, and seeking a Congressional nomination in addition to standard college application requirements like essays, recommendation letters, and SAT/ACT Scores.
 
You can also apply for the "Summer Leader Experience" which is a one week in-person immersion to the Academy and life as a Cadet.  Only 500 Students nationwide are accepted to each week-long experience.  They will be held June 3-9 and June 10 -16 at West Point.
