Senior College Application Procedures 2018-2019

 Begin Application Process (suggested submission by October-early November)

  • On-line Applications: Complete and submit on-line applications through the websites of the individual colleges.
  • Common Application: If you are applying using the Common Application (commonapp.org), you must first create an account (note the email address and password used and make sure to “Match” your Common App and Naviance).
  • FAFSA: Available October 1, 2018 apply at fafsa.ed.gov

Update Naviance:  (http://connection.naviance.com/cohs

  • Under “My Favorites”: click “Colleges I’m Thinking About”; On left click “+Add Colleges to the List”; check box of name of school; On right under “Actions”:  click “Favorite”; check box of name of school and click “Move to Application”;
    • If you applied to the college:answer questions: Which application deadlines do you prefer? (drop down menu) and How will you submit your application? (drop down menu) and if you submitted your application, check box “I’ve Already Sent My Application” and click “Add and Request Transcript”
    • If you have not submitted the application: click “Add Applications” box

Send SAT/ACTscores to colleges where you have applied through the testing agency.

  • SATs register at. sat.org–8/25/18 (deadline 7/27); 10/6/18(deadline 9/7); 11/3/18(deadline 10/5); 12/1/18(deadline 11/2); 3/9/19(deadline 2/8); 5/4/19(deadline 4/5); 6/1/19(deadline 5/3)
  • ACTs:register at act.org–9/8/18 (deadline 8/10); 10/27/18 (deadline 9/28); 12/8/18 (deadline 11/2); 2/9/19 (deadline 1/11); 4/13/19 (deadline 3/8); 6/8/19(deadline 5/3)         

CompleteCounseling Center’s orange transcript request forms: 

  • Fill out the orange transcript request form in the Counseling Center.
  • Each transcript request is $5.
  • Your assigned counselor will send all transcripts, school forms, and recommendations (electronically through Naviance or by mail)

Guidance Counselor Assignments

Notes:  If you are an athlete and planning on playing a Division I or II sport in college, register with the NCAA Eligibility Center:  www.eligibilitycenter.org  Check qualification requirements (16 core courses, SATs, GPA).  After 3 or 4 weeks, go to websites of colleges applied to check status of applications-only completed applications are reviewed for acceptance.  Scholarship opportunitiesthat come to the attention of the Counseling Center are listed on Naviance under the College tab.

  • Teacher Recommendations: Ask teachers in person and then send a
  • request through Naviancehttp://connection.naviance.com/cohs(Login=COHS email address and password=student number)
    • To send a request through Naviance: (“College” tab; “Apply to College” >Letters of Recommendation; click blue ADD REQUEST button on the right, select teacher from drop down menu. and click/check circle “all current and future colleges I add to my Colleges I’m Applying Tolist; add a personal thank you note; click blue SUBMIT REQUEST button on the bottom right).
  • Research and visit colleges: Continue to research and visit colleges and be prepared with a list of schools where you are ready to submit applications when you return in September.
  • SATs and/or ACTs
  • Test preparation: Collegeboard or Kahn Academy kahnacademy.org  (use cohs email account for login)
  • Recommended to take once in Spring of Junior year and then again Senior year

  • College Essay:  Continue to revise college essay/packet begun in ELA class.
