Summer Assignments 2023

 

 

All Juniors, regardless of when they registered at O’Hara, have the following summer assignments:

 

Theology - You are required to purchase, read, highlight, and annotate Be Transformed: The Healing Power of the Sacraments by Bob Schuchts in preparation for assignments and discussions in class. Keep in mind that annotation is more than just highlighting; it also entails giving each chapter a brief two- to three-word summary, circling difficult words and looking them up, and writing your thoughts about the text in the margins. Please refer to the Theology Department letter for more information and readings.

 

Chesterton Scholar Program- Theology: The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis. ISBN #978-0060652937 - This book must be purchased and annotated. Remember, annotation means that in addition to highlighting, you include a brief two- to three- word summary for every chapter, circle and look up hard vocabulary, and record your reaction to the text in the margins. This book will be turned in to your Theology teacher on the first day of school. Late submissions are allowed, but you will lose two points a day. The version is not important (this is not a translation. This is one of the few books we do that was written in modern English) - buy whichever one you like best.

 

ELA - For the summer reading requirement this year, each student will be asked to read a book aligned with the curriculum of the year he/she is entering. Students, including transfer and incoming freshmen, are asked to complete the reading before the first day of school.  Each teacher will discuss and assess the books  during the first quarter for a major grade.  All students, regardless of date of admission, are required to complete the summer reading assignment. Please see the English Department letter for more information.

 

Chesterton Scholar Program –  Literature: Catherine of Sienna by Singred Undset. ISBN  #978-1586174088. You will not need to annotate this book, so a copy from the library will work. You will discuss and work with this book with your Literature teacher.

 

Mathematics – You must complete the Delta Math Assignment.  Please refer to the information and instructional video provided by the math department.  Those taking Precalculus, Algebra II, or Geometry must also complete the Math/Numbers Based Article Review.

 

Spanish II- You are required to complete the Spanish II packet by the first day of school. You are welcome to email Ms. Menna for help at [email protected].

AP Spanish –You are all required to work on summer assignments in preparation for Advanced Placement Spanish.  This work will be found in Schoology.  Please enroll in your class Schoology page.  It is titled Summer 2023 AP Spanish O'Hara. All instructions, activities, and due dates will be found there. Assignments will be posted on Monday, June 26th.  Students who experience problems enrolling with the Schoology page are welcome to email Ms. Menna at [email protected] for help.
