Summer Reading Information

June, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Although our Adopt A Book Summer Reading Program has been very successful, circumstances this year have necessitated a change for the coming school year.

In offering a summer reading requirement, it is our hope to foster a life-long love of reading in our students.   This year we would like to invite you to choose a book with your student.

Here are some parameters to keep in mind as you search.

Please choose something:

  • That  your student has not read before.
  • At or above your student’s reading level
  • With a minimum of 200 pages
  • That does not already have a movie based upon it; often times Hollywood takes extreme liberties with works, and the book differs significantly from the movie

You may want to consider looking at award winners or books short- listed for awards.

To aid you in your search, the department  offers these sites:

https://www.facebook.com/projectlitcommunity/

https://www.vocabulary.com/articles/tips-and-tricks/project-lit-communitys-2019-2020-book-selections/

https://www.commonsensemedia.org/

Students are asked to complete the reading before the first day of school.  Each teacher will assess the novel during the first quarter for a major grade.  All students, regardless of date of admission are required to complete the summer reading assignment.

Please see the parent form attached below.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you and enjoy the summer.

Sincerely,

Terri Burke Borusiewicz
