The following two essays are due tomorrow, Thursday 4/3. Each essay should be one typed page--no more, no less. Remain objective throughout. Students who will not be in class tomorrow should email or submit their essay to me by 9am. This essay will be averaged into your third quarter grade. Failure to submit the essay on time will result in a 50% grade reduction. ALL students are required to complete these essays--no exceptions or excuses. This assignment has been emailed and is posted on my website. If you were absent today you are still responsible for completing the assignment. 1. Examine the multiple meanings of the play's title, The Dumb Waiter. In what way does each of the two characters, Ben and Gus, act as a dumb waiter or a dumbwaiter? 2. What do we learn from Ben and Gus's quarrel over whether it is correct to say "light the kettle"? What does this exchange tell us about their relationship? How is the control of language connected to maintaining power?
