LIONS FOOTBALL ALUMNI:

Freshmen Running Back J.T. Blyden Impresses Coaches, Teammates in Debut

It is not every day that a high school can boast having one of its former student-athletes make it to the NFL, let alone 3 at one time! O'Hara has done just that! Following this weekend's NFL Draft, Tom Savage (Class of 2009) and Corey Brown (Class of 2010) have joined 2006 graduate Anthony Walters who is entering his fourth season in the NFL. This is huge news for O'Hara! All 3 of these players are recent graduates of Cardinal O'Hara and each played under Coach Dan Algeo. This is a testament to COHS and the Lions Football program.

With the 135th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans selected Quarterback and O'Hara product Tom Savage. Following Tom's graduation from O'Hara in 2009, he began his career at Rutgers and eventually transferred to the University of Pittsburgh. During his final season at Pitt in 2013, Savage completed 61.2 percent of his throws for 2,958 yards and 21 touchdowns. Tom was a member of O'Hara's football team for four years and started at quarterback for three. He threw for 1,355 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior, earning All-Catholic and All-League honors.

Congratulations to O'Hara's Corey Brown '10 for signing a free-agent contract with the Carolina Panthers as a wide receiver. As a senior for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Corey caught 63 passes for 771 yards and 10 touchdowns this past season. For three straight seasons, Brown led the Buckeye receivers in receptions, and over his four seasons with Ohio State, Brown started 35 games and stockpiled 1,750 yards on 145 receptions. According to OSU Coach Urban Meyer regarding Corey, "He’s the absolute leader of this team, unchallenged, unquestionable." Under Coach Algeo at O'Hara, Brown was a two-time All-State selection and MVP of the Philadelphia Catholic League. He accumulated 3,000 yards rushing, 1,500 yards receiving and 50 touchdowns, and represented O'Hara in the UnderArmour All-America Game. In addition, Corey was an All-American sprinter while at O'Hara and earned All-State, All-Delco and All-Catholic honors in track.

Congratulations, too, to O'Hara product Anthony Walters '06 for signing with the Arizona Cardinals. Anthony is an unrestricted free agent who spent the last three seasons as a safety for the Chicago Bears. In his time with Chicago, Walters appeared in 33 games and accumulated 19 solo tackles. Following an All-Catholic career at O'Hara, Anthony attended the University of Delaware. During his career at Delaware (2007-10), he started all 50 games in which he appeared, registering 258 tackles (189 solo), 12 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, 16 interceptions, and 31 pass breakups. He was a two-time all-Colonial Athletic Association honoree. While at O'Hara, Walters was a two-time All-Catholic player, leading the Lions to the PCL Championship title in 2004. During his senior year, Anthony led the Lions back to the championship, earning All-Catholic MVP honors, as well as All-State honors. Anthony also played in the prestigious Big 33 game, in which Pennsylvania beat Ohio.

It will be awesome to watch three O'Hara products play against the Philadelphia Eagles in successive weeks this fall. . . Week 8 - Anthony Walters with the Arizona Cardinals (away); Week 9 - Tommy Savage with the Houston Texans (away); and Week 10 - Corey Brown with the Carolina Panthers (home).   Congratulations to COHS, Coach Dan Algeo, the Lions Football Program, and the Savage, Brown and Walters Families.
